Elements of play and creative thinking have been incorporated to enhance the success of the youngest learners at Bloomington鈥檚 Fairview Elementary.
Fairview Elementary听became an听听school in 2010 when it opened its new facility on West Seventh Street in downtown Bloomington.听听外网天堂听partnered with the school in the fall of 2013 to introduce the arts-infused curriculum to the first preschool cohort.听 On May 13th, 2014, the partners invited school board members and fellow educators to witness the students鈥 progress.
Everything that you鈥檙e going to experience with us today is meaning making.听 We play to exist; we play to learn.
鈥淭he focus is to use the arts as an integrative tool across the curriculum,鈥 explained听听Jeffery Allen,听executive director of Ivy Tech鈥檚 Lifelong Learning programs. 鈥淭he school was unable to provide that level of service to the newly formed preschool.听 We were able to partner with Fairview in delivering a visual artist and a theatre artist to work one on one directly with the preschool teacher,鈥 said Allen.听鈥淲e have a trifecta if you will.听听 We have听Lynne Hall听who is an amazing teacher in this school, an amazing visual arts teacher in听Ginger Brinn, and an amazing teacher in Gus.鈥
鈥淓verything that you鈥檙e going to experience with us today is meaning making,鈥 explained听听Gustave Weltsek听at the May 13 presentation.听 鈥淲e play to exist; we play to learn.听 A lot of people say playing is frivolous.听 That is wrong.听 Playing is essential to the way we exist and we have to play.鈥 A professor of theater and the director of arts and humanities at 外网天堂, Weltsek has researched and participated in arts infusion education for over 15 years.
When we involve them in the arts, things start to make sense.听 We鈥檙e meeting different types of learners with just these activities.
鈥淢y idea was to frame this exploration in how the world works in meaning making through a fictional space exploration.听 All along the way we have been learning notions of space and time, distance, constellations, patterns.听 You鈥檙e seeing maps the kids made of where they鈥檙e going, and what they鈥檙e seeing.听 There鈥檚 a lot of visual literacy too.听 It鈥檚 all a part of meaning making.听 We鈥檙e not just a written literacy species.听 We have literacies that are multi-module and complex,鈥 听says Weltsek.
The students took a timed flashcard test developed by Juniper Gardens Children鈥檚 project affiliated with the University of Kansas.听 They tested for vocabulary, alliteration, and rhyme.
鈥淭empleton had a 39% average increase without arts infused education.听 The Fairview students had 117%.听 The average student doubled their score,鈥 said Allen.
At the May 13 press conference, the announcement of the test results was followed by a student demonstration.
鈥淲e鈥檙e going to play a little game today called 鈥極rbit Around The Sun鈥,鈥 announced Weltsek.听 鈥淲e have the students standing up pretending to be planets.听 It dawned on them that the further away the sun, it鈥檚 colder, and that鈥檚 like winter.鈥
鈥淲hen we involve them in the arts, things start to make sense,鈥 explains Fairview preschool teacher Lynne Hall. 鈥淭hese little light bulbs go off, and when they go back to the classroom, they start to get things.听 Our little guys who are a little resistant to learning find a reason to be excited about school, and they can鈥檛 help but be compelled to be engaged in the learning.听 So, we鈥檙e meeting different types of learners with just these activities.鈥
Since the test results proved a marked improvement in the students鈥 development, Ivy Tech and Fairview hope to expand programs that utilize a child鈥檚 natural inclination to play as a mechanism to learn and explore the world, but before they become a beacon for the state and nation, they must expand their research.
鈥淲e鈥檙e next door to a Research 1 institution,鈥 says Weltsek, 鈥淭here needs to be an investment by the entire community on exploring what arts infusion does for the human learning event.鈥
