Over the eight-week summer semester at 外网天堂 Muncie-Henry County, 14 high school students hailing from schools across Delaware County participated in the Ivy+ Healthcare Academy, powered by United Healthcare. These students successfully completed five skills training sessions and three Ivy Tech courses, earning four and a half credits from Ivy Tech.

The Healthcare Academy was聽conceived through a collaborative effort between United Healthcare and Ivy Tech, aimed at ensuring the future of healthcare in Indiana. The Healthcare Academy had 14 high聽school聽students聽dedicated to completing the academy, gaining valuable life聽skills聽to聽support their future careers聽in healthcare.

Jennifer聽Gasiorek, Vice Chancellor of Workforce Partnerships聽and聽Strategic Communications聽said, 鈥淲hen exploring the idea of the Healthcare Academy, Ivy Tech Muncie was聽excited to become the first campus聽in the聽state to offer the program. We were聽so proud that these聽students聽sacrificed their聽summer to focus聽on their education and investing in exploring future career paths.鈥

Mackenzie Pryor, a聽senior from Monroe Central High聽School,聽shared her experience,聽saying, 鈥淚 learned a lot about CPR,聽sutures, and tourniquets聽鈥 things聽I鈥檇 mostly聽seen in movies. This聽program helped me realize my passion for medical imaging, and I鈥檓 grateful for that. It was聽truly enjoyable.鈥

Participants聽in the academy earned certification in CPR, acquired聽skills聽in wound聽stitching,聽stop the bleed, TB tests, and blood draws. They also learned to create effective resumes聽and develop essential聽soft聽skills聽required for healthcare professionals. These included understanding ethical conduct, HIPAA compliance, professional attire and communication, and interacting with individuals聽from diverse cultural backgrounds.

Jack Roberts, a聽sophomore from Burris聽Laboratory聽School, reflected on his聽experience,聽saying, 鈥淚 learned professionalism,聽student聽success, and customer聽service. One of my favorite parts聽was聽visiting the hospital and聽seeing everything firsthand.鈥

A highlight for many participants聽was聽a field trip to Indiana Health Ball Memorial Hospital. Here, they wore protective bunny聽suits, which completely covered their clothing to maintain a聽sterile environment in聽surgical聽suites. They observed the聽sterilization processes, material management, and the workings聽of the聽surgical admissions聽unit.

Maci Ramsey, a recent graduate of Delta High聽School,聽shared her enthusiasm,聽saying, 鈥淢y favorite experience in this聽Healthcare Academy was聽when we went to Ball Memorial Hospital. We got to聽see how everything is聽sterilized, how things聽work, and we got to wear the bunny聽suits聽all day.鈥

If these students are any representation of the future of the Muncie Community, the State of Indiana, and the state of healthcare, I’m not afraid and neither should you be. These students are smart, funny, caring, helpful, kind, bold, intuitive, and inquisitive. They are problem solvers and world changers. Our healthcare future is in highly capable hands.

The program culminated in a completion celebration on July 27, where聽students聽showcased the聽skills聽they had acquired during the academy. Family members, Ivy Tech聽staff and faculty, as聽well as聽United Healthcare representatives, joined in celebrating their achievements.

Keith Mason, Regional Director for Growth and聽Strategy at United Healthcare, acknowledged the聽students鈥 efforts,聽stating, 鈥淲e provided聽some treasure, and Ivy Tech provided the talent, time, and developed the academy. Then you, the聽students, provided the rocket fuel. You have the聽skills聽to do it. I know it鈥檚聽super聽scary when聽someone needs聽help, but Ivy Tech gave you the聽skills聽to do it.鈥

鈥淲e appreciate the partnership and support of United Healthcare for allowing us to do this important work together in the community,鈥 Ivy Tech President Sue Ellspermann said. 鈥淲e recognize our students鈥 commitment, and the skills they have developed will make聽them more likely to pursue critically needed healthcare professions and provide them with both college credit and immediately marketable skills.鈥
